Chapter Eight

Sophie sat in a pew toward the back of the sanctuary. Every once in a while the urge to turn and look over her shoulder toward the vestibule overcame her and she turned, although she wasn’t sure why. If he was still coming, he’d be there in a few minutes, and if something came up and his plans were altered, it was just as well, wasn’t it? After all, this was the same person she struggled to speak to every day at work, so how did she think she was going to manage talking to him at church?

That morning, she’d practically begged Valerie to come to church with her, even though she knew her roommate was having enough trouble balancing her own church and Alec’s. Valerie had assured her everything would be fine. She wouldn’t even have much of a chance to speak to Zach since they’d be listening to the sermon. Still, Sophie felt a lump forming in her throat and her stomach was gurgling. She’d been so nervous thinking about Zach during her Sunday school class, she’d hardly had any idea what the message was about, which made her feel terrible. Nevertheless, she had a feeling the sermon might go that way as well if she didn’t get control of herself.

“Pardon me, miss. Is this seat taken?”

Sophie looked up into familiar blue eyes. How had he managed to make it in without her seeing him? Without answering, she slid over, and Zach sat down next to her. “How are you this morning?” he asked.

“Good,” Sophie replied. She noticed the worship band was taking their spots on the stage and felt relieved that she wouldn’t have much of a chance to talk. While she still thought she might be anxious sitting so closely to him for the duration of the sermon, she was glad he was there. She really loved her church, and she felt like Zach would make a lot of new friends here.

“That’s good to hear. It was a little tricky finding a parking spot.”

“Really?” Sophie asked. She looked around and noticed there were a lot of people in attendance, which was a good thing. Most of the time, she got there before most and left well after the other congregates had taken off with few exceptions, so she’d never noticed the parking lot on a regular Sunday. “Well, I’m glad you’re here.” Even as the words left her mouth, Sophie felt herself blushing. Had she been too bold?

Before Zach could respond, the worship leader, Tara, called for everyone to stand, and the band broke into one of Sophie’s favorite songs. She sang along, clapping her hands, and smiled at Zach when she saw that he also seemed to know this one. He smiled back at her, and during a break between songs, he leaned over and whispered, “Thank goodness God doesn’t care that I can’t carry a tune in a bucket.”

She laughed but didn’t comment back. Sophie could hear him, though, and she had to disagree.
